Free jazz
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Free jazz let go of the conventions of theme, chord changes, time signature and tempo: musicians often improvise at the same time, and dissonances become material. The name comes from the album Free Jazz (1961) by Ornette Coleman, a Texan who came to New York from Los Angeles in late 1959 with a quartet without a piano.

Listening tip. Listen to Lonely Woman for the way the horns play the melody together, without piano and without fixed chord changes.
