Irène Schweizer
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
The pianist Irène Schweizer from Schaffhausen in Switzerland first played Dixieland and hard bop, and in the 1960s became one of the first European women in free jazz. In 1967 she played on Jazz Meets India. She worked with Peter Brötzmann, Louis Moholo and Han Bennink, and in the 1970s also with the Feminist Improvising Group, a group of improvising women. From 1986 she recorded extensively for the Zürich label Intakt, which she co-founded. Her playing is energetic and rhythmic, with influences from South African jazz that she heard in Zürich in the 1960s. She died in 2024.
