Han Bennink

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The drummer Han Bennink from Zaandam began as a young drummer in swing and bebop; Kenny Clarke was his model. He accompanied American soloists visiting the Netherlands, such as Eric Dolphy in 1964 and Sonny Rollins in 1967. He then became one of the best-known free improvisers in Europe. In 1967 he founded the Instant Composers Pool with Misha Mengelberg and Willem Breuker, and he played for years with Peter Brötzmann. Bennink plays on anything that makes a sound: his drum kit, the floor, chairs, the stage. His performances are energetic and funny. He is also a visual artist.
