Eric Dolphy

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Eric Dolphy, from Los Angeles, played alto saxophone, flute and bass clarinet, an instrument that he was one of the first to use as a solo instrument in jazz. Charlie Parker was his starting point, but his lines made great leaps and sounded like birdsong. He played with Charles Mingus, John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman, and in 1964 recorded Out to Lunch! for Blue Note, with vibraphone and free forms. In June 1964 he recorded a session in Hilversum for the VARA with the pianist Misha Mengelberg and the drummer Han Bennink, released as Last Date. A few weeks later he died in Berlin of undiagnosed diabetes.
