Out There

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Out There was released in September 1961 on Prestige Records and was only Eric Dolphy's second album as a leader. He had shortly before played with Charles Mingus. On this album he is in a quartet with cellist Ron Carter, who had then only just begun to be heard on records, bassist George Duvivier and drummer Roy Haynes. There is no piano or guitar. As a result he and Carter solo only above bass and drums, and the music sounds freer than on Outward Bound, which did include pianist Jaki Byard.

Dolphy wrote four of the tracks himself. There are also pieces by Mingus, Randy Weston and Hale Smith. In Eclipse he solos, rarely enough, on clarinet. The DownBeat reviewer of the day heard an improvement in his bass clarinet. Later Michael G. Nastos of AllMusic wrote that the music had a depth and a purpose that remained unique.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Serene and notice the bass clarinet and the cello above bass and drums. What do your ears miss, or not miss, without a piano?
