Caribé

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Caribé is an album by the Latin Jazz Quintet with Eric Dolphy, recorded in 1960 and released in February 1961 on the label New Jazz. The group around conga player Juan Amalbert also consists of pianist Gene Casey, vibraphonist Charlie Simons, bassist Bill Ellington and drummer Manny Ramos. Esmond Edwards supervised and Rudy Van Gelder recorded it. As a guest, he plays alto saxophone, flute and bass clarinet.

AllMusic compared the record to a stick of dynamite at a quiet dinner that nevertheless disturbs nothing: not an ideal combination, but certainly fascinating. The biographers Vladimir Simosko and Barry Tepperman thought the solos by Casey and Simons good, but the strongest voice on the session was that of the horn player. He really plays along with the group and does not give up his own approach.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Caribé, at just over ten minutes the longest track, and notice how the horn player relates to the congas and the rhythm of the group.
