Latin jazz
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
From 1943 Machito and Mario Bauzá mixed jazz with Cuban music in New York. In 1947 Dizzy Gillespie took the Cuban conga player Chano Pozo, who had recently moved to New York, into his big band. Jazz swings long-short, while Afro-Cuban music is built on evenly divided notes and the clave; in Latin jazz the two come together. From 1958 João Gilberto and Antônio Carlos Jobim created bossa nova in Rio de Janeiro.
Listening
Listening tip. Listen to Manteca for Pozo's conga ostinato and a bebop bridge in swing: two rhythmic worlds in one piece.
