Habanera
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Habanera · The habanera is a Cuban dance of the nineteenth century, named after Havana. Its characteristic feature is a rhythm in 2/4 with a dotted first beat and an accent that falls just off the beat. Via Spain and via the ports of the Caribbean, that rhythm spread throughout the Americas: in New Orleans you can hear it in early jazz, and it also underlies the Afro-Cuban music of Latin jazz.
Listening
Listening tip. Listen to La Paloma for the swaying habanera rhythm in the accompaniment: long, short and then two equal beats.
