Son
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Son · The son comes from the east of Cuba and became popular in Havana in the 1920s. It mixes Spanish song forms and the tres, a Cuban guitar, with African rhythms and percussion: bongos, maracas and the clave. A singer alternates with a chorus, and in the second section the band repeats a short pattern, the montuno. The mambo, salsa and a large part of Latin jazz grew out of the son.
Listening
Listening tip. In Chan Chan, hear the tres, the ticking of the clave and the chorus answering the singer.
