Salsa is the name that emerged in New York in the late 1960s for the Afro-Cuban dance music of Puerto Rican and Cuban musicians. The label Fania, with Johnny Pacheco, Willie Colón, Héctor Lavoe and Celia Cruz, made salsa big in the 1970s. Its basis is the son, with the clave and the montuno, supplemented with trombones, jazz chords and lyrics about life in the barrio.
