Afro-Cuban

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Afro-Cuban is an album by the American jazz trumpeter Kenny Dorham, recorded for Blue Note. The sessions took place on 30 January and 29 March 1955. The album was released that same year in the Blue Note Modern Jazz Series, shortly before the label discontinued that format. Alfred Lion was the producer and Rudy Van Gelder the recording engineer.

The sessions featured Hank Mobley on tenor saxophone, Cecil Payne on baritone saxophone, Horace Silver on piano and Art Blakey on drums. The March session also brought in the trombonist J.J. Johnson, the bassist Oscar Pettiford, the conga player Carlos Patato Valdes and Richie Goldberg on cowbell. This gave the record its Latin American percussion. The album was later reissued with a new cover. The reviewer for Allmusic calls it a first-rate recording by an underrated trumpeter.
