Jazz Contrasts

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Jazz Contrasts is an album by the American jazz trumpeter Kenny Dorham, recorded in 1957 and released by Riverside. It has six tracks and runs for about 41 minutes. It consists mainly of well-known standards, such as Falling in Love with Love, I'll Remember April, My Old Flame and But Beautiful, supplemented by La Rue and La Villa.

Besides Dorham on trumpet, Sonny Rollins plays tenor saxophone on four tracks. The others are Hank Jones on piano, Oscar Pettiford on bass and Max Roach on drums. They are joined by the harpist Betty Glamann, who is heard on three tracks and gives the record an unusual tonal colour. According to the Allmusic reviewer, the album is on the short side but contains many memorable tracks.

Listening tip. Listen to La Rue and notice the harp of Betty Glamann: how does it sound alongside the trumpet?
