Max Roach

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Max Roach grew up in Brooklyn and as a teenager was already playing at Minton's and Monroe's Uptown House. He built on the work of Kenny Clarke and became the most important drummer of bebop. He played with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie and from 1954 led a leading quintet with the trumpeter Clifford Brown. Roach saw the drum kit as a melodic instrument and played solos with a clear shape. After Brown's death in 1956 he committed himself more and more to the civil rights movement. In 1960 he recorded We Insist! Max Roach's Freedom Now Suite with the singer Abbey Lincoln. Later he taught at university and worked with hip hop musicians.
