Abbey Lincoln
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Abbey Lincoln began as a nightclub singer and appeared in a Hollywood film in 1956. Billie Holiday was her great example. Through her relationship with drummer Max Roach, whom she married, she became involved in the civil rights movement. On We Insist! (1960) she sang and screamed in the section Protest, a piece without words. Her own album Straight Ahead (1961) was rejected by some critics because she was said to be too political. She also acted in films, including For Love of Ivy (1968). In the 1990s she made a series of albums of her own songs for the label Verve, which made her widely known again.
