It’s Magic

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

It’s Magic · It's Magic is the third album by the singer Abbey Lincoln. She recorded it in New York in 1958 for the Riverside label, in two sessions on 24 July and 15 August. She sings with a large ensemble of jazz musicians, including the trumpeters Kenny Dorham and Art Farmer, the saxophonist Benny Golson, the pianist Wynton Kelly and the drummer Philly Joe Jones.

The album contains classics of the American repertoire, such as the title song by Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne and Exactly Like You. Out of the Past is by Golson, with lyrics by Jon Hendricks, and Little Niles is by Randy Weston. Scott Yanow of AllMusic gave it four and a half stars. According to John Fordham in The Guardian, she here picks up the urgency of the civil rights movement, and the sharpness of a freer jazz that was still to come.
