Hard bop
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
On the East Coast, many Black musicians found Cool Jazz too restrained. Hard bop uses the harmony and solo technique of bebop, but mixes them with rhythm and blues, gospel and blues, with a heavier groove. Much of it appeared on the New York label Blue Note, such as John Coltrane's Blue Train (1957).
Listening
Listening tip. In Blue Train, listen for the heavy groove and the bluesy theme that the horns play together.
