Afrobeat
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Around 1970 Fela Kuti in Lagos blended highlife with jazz and the funk of James Brown: Afrobeat. With his band Africa 70 and the drummer Tony Allen he played long tracks of ten minutes and more, with repeated guitar patterns, horns and a driving rhythm. In his lyrics Fela attacked the Nigerian military government, which earned him arrests and violence. Zombie (1976) is a mocking song about soldiers who follow orders without thinking.
Listening
Listening tip. In Zombie, hear how drums, bass and guitars build a long groove before the horns and Fela's voice come in.
