Afrobeats

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Afrobeats is the West African pop music of the 2010s: danceable songs with a relaxed rhythm, vocals in English, Pidgin and Yoruba, and influences from dancehall, R&B and hip hop. It is something different from the Afrobeat of Fela Kuti, although the name honours that forerunner. Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy became global stars; Wizkid sang on Drake's One Dance (2016), and Burna Boy won a Grammy in 2021.

Listening

Listening tip. In Essence, hear the slow, swaying rhythm with the light percussion and the vocals that lie relaxed over it.
