Streaming (Spotify)

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Technology

Streaming (Spotify) · In October 2008, Spotify started in Stockholm. You no longer bought songs but paid for access to the whole catalogue, or listened for free with adverts. The playlist took over the role of the album, and an algorithm helps choose what you hear. A stream only counts after thirty seconds, and that changed the form of pop songs: shorter intros, the hook early, shorter songs. Artists are paid per stream. At the same time, music from Lagos or Johannesburg could reach a worldwide audience through playlists.

Listening

Listening tip. How quickly does the hook arrive? Count the seconds until you know what the song is about.
