TikTok, the app for short videos from the Chinese company ByteDance, broke through worldwide in 2018. Users choose a sound clip and make a video to go with it. A few seconds of a song can thus circulate millions of times, made by users themselves. Old Town Road by Lil Nas X became a worldwide hit in this way in 2019. Since then, record companies have been looking for songs with a moment that works in a short video, and artists sometimes release a snippet first to see whether it catches on.
