From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Technology
YouTube began in 2005 as a website where anyone could share videos. Within a few years it was the place to which the music video moved, and for many young people the most important way of listening to music. Artists could find an audience without a record company: Justin Bieber was discovered through videos on YouTube. Chicago drill rappers such as Chief Keef became known in 2012 with home-made clips. Gangnam Style by PSY was the first video to be watched more than a billion times, and brought K-pop to worldwide attention.
