Justin Bieber

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Justin Bieber is a Canadian singer, born in 1994 in London, Ontario, and raised in Stratford. He learned to play piano, drums, guitar and trumpet. In 2007, at the age of twelve, he entered a local singing contest with So Sick by Ne-Yo. His mother put videos of his performances on YouTube, where he gained more and more followers. The manager Scooter Braun clicked on one of those videos by chance, tracked him down and took him to Atlanta. Bieber signed with RBMG, a company of Braun and Usher.

Music and breakthrough

His first EP, My World (2009), made him a teen idol. The debut album My World 2.0 (2010) went to the top of the American album chart, with the single Baby. In doing so he was the youngest male solo artist to manage that in 47 years. Under the Mistletoe (2011) was the first Christmas album by a man to debut straight at number one. Believe (2012) and Journals (2013) followed. With Purpose (2015) his sound changed under the influence of dance. It includes Love Yourself, Sorry and What Do You Mean?, three number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2017 he sang on Despacito. Changes (2020) and Justice (2021) also debuted at number one.

Influence

Bieber kept letting his image and musical style change, and moved through pop, R&B and dance.
