MTV and the music video

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Technology

MTV and the music video · On 1 August 1981, MTV began in the United States, a television channel that broadcast music videos all day long. The first video was Video Killed the Radio Star by The Buggles. A pop star now also had to look good on screen, with clothes, hairstyle and a story. British synth-pop and New Romantic groups, who were already preoccupied with image, conquered the American charts in this way. In its first years, MTV played almost only white rock; it was only when Michael Jackson's videos reached the channel that this changed.
