Streaming pop
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Streaming pop is pop made for the way people have listened since the 2010s: via Spotify, YouTube and TikTok. Songs have become shorter on average, often begin straight away with the hook and mix genres freely. In December 2018, Lil Nas X from Atlanta put Old Town Road online, on a beat he had bought for 30 dollars. The song became big via TikTok, where thousands of users made videos to it, and spent nineteen weeks at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The debate over whether it was country showed how genres blur in the streaming era.
Listening
Listening tip. Hear the banjo from country on top of a trap beat with deep 808 bass and rattling hi-hats.
