Amapiano

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Amapiano emerged in the mid-2010s in the townships around Pretoria and Johannesburg out of South African house and jazz. Characteristic is the log drum, a deep, rubbery bass that works as a melody, beneath calm piano chords and a slow house beat. In the 2020s amapiano went around the world; Tyla's Water (2023) won a Grammy.

Listening

Listening tip. In Water, hear the log drum: the deep, rolling bass beneath the slow rhythm and the soft vocals.
