Reggaeton
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Reggaeton grew in the 1990s in Panama and Puerto Rico out of Jamaican dancehall and hip hop, in Spanish. Its basis is the dembow rhythm, named after Dem Bow (1990) by Shabba Ranks: a stomping bass drum with a snare that falls just before and on the beat. In 2004, Daddy Yankee scored a worldwide hit with Gasolina, and Despacito (2017) by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee became one of the most streamed songs ever.
Listening
Listening tip. In Gasolina, hear the dembow rhythm: the bass drum on every beat and the snare that always falls just before it.
