Drill

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Drill emerged around 2011 in Chicago: hard, dark rap about the violence in the neighbourhood, with Chief Keef as the best-known name. In London, from about 2014, young people made a variant of their own, UK drill, with sliding 808 bass lines, a skipping rhythm and lyrics that often led to debate. Drill then spread across the world, to the Netherlands too.

Listening

Listening tip. In Love Sosa, hear the menacing synthesizers, the heavy 808 and the repeated, almost chanted lines.
