Grime

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Grime · In the early 2000s grime emerged in East London: rap in a London accent over fast, bare, electronic beats at around 140 bpm, with influences from UK garage, jungle and dancehall. MCs battled one another on pirate radio. In 2003 Dizzee Rascal won the Mercury Prize with his debut Boy in da Corner, and later Skepta and Stormzy became big stars.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to I Luv U for the cold, abrasive synthesizers and the fast, nervous flow of Dizzee Rascal.
