Boy in da Corner

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Boy in da Corner is Dizzee Rascal's debut album and was released on 21 July 2003 on XL Recordings. Around the age of fourteen he became a drum and bass DJ and rapped on pirate radio. At sixteen he made his first single, I Luv U, himself and signed a solo contract with XL. That song is also on the album.

The record combines British garage beats with a distinctly British outlook. Critics heard in his desperate outbursts and focused anger the voice of a younger generation, with lyrics about growing up, about people who do not want to grow up and about dying before you are grown. Fix Up, Look Sharp uses a sample of The Big Beat by Billy Squier. The album won the Mercury Prize in 2003 and brought grime, a movement from British youth circles, to the attention of a worldwide audience. According to Complex, it made him the first international rapper from his country.
