Dance

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Dance was released on 4 September 1981 on Beggars Banquet. It was Gary Numan's third solo album and his first studio record after the farewell concerts at Wembley Arena. He had been working on it since late 1980 and was deliberately looking for new directions. With sparse electronic sounds, drum machines and plenty of percussion, it became his most experimental album to date. Mick Karn, the bassist of Japan, played on it and improvised a saxophone riff on She's Got Claws, of which the first take was kept. The violinist Nash the Slash and Queen's drummer Roger Taylor also took part.

The single She's Got Claws reached number 6 and the album number 3. The reviews were mixed: some praised the less commercial course, others reacted sceptically. Later The Quietus called the record one of his most interesting albums, with the ten-minute Cry, The Clock Said as its highlight.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Cry, The Clock Said and notice the steady beats, the softly glittering keyboards and the violinist Nash the Slash, who gives the piece a mournful tone.
