Telekon

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Telekon is Gary Numan's second solo album and entered the British albums chart at number 1 in September 1980. It closes the machine phase that he had begun with Replicas and The Pleasure Principle. The recording was almost finished by December 1979, but the contract with Beggars Banquet allowed only one album a year, so the release had to wait.

The sound is richer than on the previous record: plenty of guitars, a greater variety of synthesizers and, in addition, viola and violin. Pieces such as I'm an Agent and The Joy Circuit sound heavy, while Sleep by Windows and Remember I Was Vapour are wistful. On several tracks a note of farewell can be heard, which suited his decision, soon afterwards, to stop playing live. The British press was largely hostile, but Trent Reznor later cited the record as an influence.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Remember I Was Vapour and notice the wistful atmosphere: can you hear how the song sounds like a farewell?
