Beggars Banquet

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Beggars Banquet was released on 6 December 1968 and was the seventh album by the Rolling Stones, the first under producer Jimmy Miller. After the psychedelic pop records Between the Buttons and Their Satanic Majesties Request, the group returned to roots and blues. Brian Jones was unreliable in the studio because of his drug use, so Keith Richards recorded almost all the guitar parts. Even so, Jones played on eight tracks, including sitar and tanpura on Street Fighting Man.

The album is instrumentally adventurous, with Latin rhythms, claves, tabla, shehnai and congas. A fine example is Sympathy for the Devil, with hypnotic African rhythms. Street Fighting Man became an eternal radio favourite. The record company rejected the first cover, showing a scrawled-on toilet wall, which delayed the release by months. Critics saw the album as a return to former strength, and it has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Sympathy for the Devil and notice the hypnotic rhythms beneath Jagger's vocals. Can you hear how the congas keep driving the song onwards?
