Between the Buttons

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Between the Buttons was released on 20 January 1967 and was the fifth studio album by the Rolling Stones. Recording ran from August 1966 in Los Angeles and London, including at Olympic Sound Studios. It was the last album that Andrew Loog Oldham produced entirely. Brian Jones often left his guitar lying and played vibraphone, electric dulcimer, banjo, kazoo, theremin and saxophone.

The result is an eclectic album with influences of psychedelia, baroque pop and music hall, with piano by, among others, Ian Stewart, Jack Nitzsche and Nicky Hopkins. Mick Jagger himself was not happy with it: according to him the sound was lost through the repeated bouncing down of the four-track tapes. Critics were more positive later. Robert Christgau called it underrated, and the American version with Ruby Tuesday appears in Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Ruby Tuesday and notice the piano and the way the song stays gentle and melodic. Can you hear how far this sounds from the raw blues rock you would expect from the band?
