Aftermath
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Rolling Stones recorded Aftermath in December 1965 and March 1966 at RCA Studios in California, in the breaks between their tours. It was the first album to consist entirely of original songs by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. The title came about more or less by chance: the original title Could You Walk on the Water? was dropped by the American label for fear of offending Christians. The British release ran to well over 52 minutes, the longest for a pop record up to that time.
Brian Jones returned as an important contributor and played instruments that were unusual in pop music, such as the sitar, Appalachian dulcimer, Japanese koto and marimba. Besides blues and rhythm and blues, influences of folk, country, psychedelia, baroque and Middle Eastern music can be heard. The lyrics are dark and sarcastic, with women as prominent characters, which offended some listeners. The record spent eight weeks at the top of the British chart and is regarded as the group's first classic album.
