Let It Bleed

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Let It Bleed · Recording began in February 1969 and continued intermittently until November, at Olympic Studios in London and partly in Los Angeles. The band was in turmoil. Brian Jones, the founder, was often absent from the studio or too intoxicated, was dismissed during the sessions and died a month later. He played on only two tracks. Mick Taylor took his place, but Keith Richards played most of the guitar work. Jimmy Miller produced. The album followed Beggars Banquet and, like that album, returned to blues influences, supplemented with gospel and country.

On Gimme Shelter, Merry Clayton sings along. On You Can't Always Get What You Want the London Bach Choir sings, and Miller himself took over the drums because Charlie Watts could not find the rhythm he was after. On You Got the Silver Richards sang a solo lead vocal for the first time. The album reached number one in the United Kingdom.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the beginning of Gimme Shelter and notice the voice of Merry Clayton, which rises above the band in the choruses.
