Shelter

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Brand New Heavies released Shelter in 1997 on Delicious Vinyl. It is the only album on which singer and songwriter Siedah Garrett can be heard as a permanent band member. She joined the group in 1996 and left in early 1998 to focus on her own songwriting.

The album produced four singles. Sometimes reached number 11 on the British chart. A remix with rap by Q-Tip later gained a special reputation: according to Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, J Dilla's remix was the inspiration for Got 'til It's Gone by Janet Jackson. The cover of You've Got a Friend, a song by Carole King, became the group's only British top 10 hit, at number 9. You Are the Universe and Shelter reached numbers 21 and 31. In the United States the cover was not on the first pressings.
