Brother Sister
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Brother Sister by the Brand New Heavies was released on 22 March 1994 on Delicious Vinyl. It was the last record by singer N'Dea Davenport with the acid jazz and funk band: she left to finish her own solo album and returned ten years later. Spend Some Time spent two weeks at number two on the American dance chart. Midnight at the Oasis, a cover of Maria Muldaur, became popular in England, but is not on the American version.
According to Billboard, the record weaves traditional jazz threads through a warm fabric of funk and R&B, with Davenport's alto in the leading role. NME praised the opener Have a Good Time, a groove without much singing. Music Week found the album professional but somewhat lukewarm. Music & Media compared it with the swinging work of the Average White Band.
