Music

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Music is Carole King's third studio album. It was released in December 1971 and continues the style of Tapestry. The record was produced by Lou Adler. The songs are all her own, and on many tracks she plays piano and celeste. The photograph on the cover was taken at 8815 Appian Way in Laurel Canyon, California.

The album includes Brother, Brother, It's Going to Take Some Time and Sweet Seasons. The former became a hit for the Carpenters, while the latter reached number 9 in the United States under its own steam. Horn players such as saxophonist Curtis Amy and flautist and reed player Plas Johnson join in. The album was an instant success, went gold in December and was at number 1 on New Year's Day 1972. It was less groundbreaking than Tapestry, but it meant that both records were in the top ten at the same time.

Listening tip. Listen to Sweet Seasons and notice the horns, including Curtis Amy on tenor saxophone, alongside the piano.
