Tapestry
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Carole King had been writing hits since the early 1960s, often with her then husband Gerry Goffin, but mainly for other singers. James Taylor encouraged her to sing her own songs. Tapestry, her second studio album, was recorded in January 1971 in Studio B at A&M in Los Angeles. The producer was Lou Adler; Taylor, Joni Mitchell and experienced session musicians supported her. The album was released on 10 February 1971.
She wrote all the songs herself or with others. Goffin co-wrote the lyrics of, among others, Will You Love Me Tomorrow and (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, which had already been hits for The Shirelles and Aretha Franklin. The single It's Too Late, with I Feel the Earth Move, spent five weeks at number one. A Rolling Stone reviewer praised its remarkable personal intimacy. The album won four Grammys, including Album of the Year.
