Sticky Fingers

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Sticky Fingers · This was the first album on the new in-house label Rolling Stones Records, in April 1971, after the end of the contract with Decca and London. It was also the first studio album without the late Brian Jones, and Mick Taylor now played on a whole studio record for the first time. Producer Jimmy Miller kept it simple: drums, guitar, bass and percussion, without the unusual instruments of earlier albums. Brown Sugar, Wild Horses and You Gotta Move were recorded in December 1969 at Muscle Shoals in Alabama, the rest largely in the mobile studio at Stargroves in 1970.

Andy Warhol devised the cover, with a real zip in a pair of jeans. According to Rolling Stone it is the group's bleakest, most drug-tinged album, on which Taylor brings jazz and country into his playing. It became the first album to reach number 1 in both England and America. Brown Sugar topped the Billboard Hot 100.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Brown Sugar and notice the simple set-up of guitar, bass, drums and percussion: the sound has deliberately been pared back to the basics.
