Exile on Main St.

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Exile on Main St. · In 1971 the Rolling Stones discovered that, through financial mismanagement by their manager Allen Klein, they had paid far too little tax, and they had to leave England. Keith Richards rented the villa Nellcôte in the south of France. In the basement an improvised studio was built using the band's mobile recording truck. The sessions lasted deep into the night and the line-up changed from day to day. Overdubs followed at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles, with, among others, Nicky Hopkins, Bobby Keys and producer Jimmy Miller.

It became the group's first double album, with influences from blues, rock 'n' roll, swing, country and gospel. Happy, with Richards as singer, came about during an afternoon jam with baritone sax, guitar and drums. Tumbling Dice became a worldwide top hit. The first reactions were mixed, but at the end of the 1970s a strong reappraisal followed. It is now regarded as a turning point in rock.
