Rock 'n' roll
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Rock 'n' roll grew out of rhythm and blues, with influences from jump blues, boogie-woogie, gospel and country. Its recognisable features are the backbeat on beats 2 and 4 and a guitar riff as the hook. Rocket 88 (1951) is often called the first rock 'n' roll record; Rock Around the Clock brought the style to the general public in 1955.
Listening
Listening tip. Notice the loud snare drum on 2 and 4 and, in Rocket 88, the distorted guitar from a broken speaker.
