Slapback echo

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Technology

Slapback echo · In his small Sun studio in Memphis, Sam Phillips used two tape recorders to make a short echo: the sound was recorded and played back once more a fraction of a second later. That single quick repeat, the slapback, gave voices and guitars a spacious, bouncing sound. It became the sound of Elvis Presley's early records and of rockabilly. Shortly afterwards came stand-alone echo units with a tape loop, such as the Echoplex and the Italian Meazzi, which guitarists of Indo rock and surf often used.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the end of every word: can you hear the short second slap right behind the voice?
