Magnetic tape
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Technology
Magnetic tape · At the radio exhibition in Berlin in 1935, AEG showed the Magnetophon, a recorder that captured sound on a tape with a magnetic coating from BASF. After the war, the American company Ampex rebuilt the technology; the Ampex 200 came onto the market in 1948. Tape was a revolution: you could cut a recording, splice it, play it backwards and record over it again. Composers in Paris and Cologne used it to make new music from sounds and tape loops. Pop studios used tape to join together the best parts of different takes.
Listening
Listening tip. Here the tape itself is the instrument: which sounds come from cutting, speeding up or recording over one another?
