Boogie-woogie
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Boogie-woogie is a piano style from the blues, played in bars and at house parties in the South and later in Chicago. The left hand plays a fast, repeated bass pattern of eight notes per bar, the right hand riffs and blue notes. Pine Top Smith recorded Pine Top's Boogie Woogie in 1928; in the late 1930s the style became a craze, and the rolling left hand returned in rhythm and blues and rock 'n' roll.
Listening
Listening tip. In Pine Top's Boogie Woogie, hear the left hand playing the same rolling bass pattern again and again, while Smith calls out the dance steps.
