Surf rock
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Surf rock · In the early 1960s, young musicians in Southern California made surf rock: instrumental guitar music with plenty of reverb, in which fast, repeated notes imitate the roar of the waves. In Misirlou (1962), Dick Dale played an old Middle Eastern melody in that way. The Beach Boys turned it into vocal music, with multi-part harmonies; Brian Wilson later developed from this the studio records with which he challenged The Beatles.
Listening
Listening tip. In Misirlou, hear the reverberating guitar and the fast, repeated notes on a single string.
