Garage rock
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Garage rock · After the British Invasion, teenagers all over America started bands, rehearsed in the garage and recorded raw singles with a few chords, a screaming singer and a cheap organ. The Kingsmen already had a hit with Louie Louie in 1963, The Sonics of Tacoma played harder than anyone, and ? and the Mysterians scored with 96 Tears (1966). The compilation Nuggets (1972) brought these records to people's attention again, and punk built on them.
Listening
Listening tip. Listen to Psycho for the distorted guitar, the singer's scream and the pounding drums: punk, ten years too early.
