The Beatles

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The Beatles were a band from Liverpool, formed in 1960, with John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and, from August 1962, the drummer Ringo Starr. The core was older: Lennon and McCartney met on 6 July 1957 at a performance by Lennon's skiffle band The Quarrymen. Between 1963 and 1970 The Beatles released thirteen albums in England. In those years the pop record changed from a captured performance into something you build in the studio.

Music and breakthrough

The band learned to play in the clubs of Hamburg, from August 1960. The debut Please Please Me was recorded in a single day on 11 February 1963 at the EMI studio on Abbey Road, with the producer George Martin. After that things moved fast. On Rubber Soul (1965) Harrison plays sitar in Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown). On Revolver (1966) tape loops and guitars played backwards can be heard. That same year the band stopped performing live, and the studio became the instrument. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) and Abbey Road (1969) followed. In 1970 the group broke up.

Influence

Their American success of 1964 opened the door for the British Invasion: The Dave Clark Five, The Animals and The Rolling Stones followed. Because Lennon and McCartney wrote their own songs, writing your own material became the norm, and the songwriters of the Brill Building lost ground. Harrison's sitar led to raga rock, and the studio technique of Revolver to psychedelic and progressive rock. In the 1990s Oasis again took The Beatles as its model.

Listening

Listening tip. In Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds the verse is in 3/4 time and the chorus in 4/4. Listen to how the waltz turns into a straight four at the chorus, and follow the countermelody that McCartney plays on a Lowrey organ.
