Magical Mystery Tour
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Magical Mystery Tour belongs to the television film of the same name from 1967. The idea came from Paul McCartney, who after Sgt. Pepper wanted to film a psychedelic bus trip. After the death of manager Brian Epstein at the end of August the project went ahead after all, and the recording ran alongside the filming and editing. Biographers call the sessions unfocused, and producer George Martin spoke of organised chaos. In England a double EP was released, in the United States an LP with extra singles.
The Beatles kept experimenting with the studio. For I Am the Walrus John Lennon sang through a poor microphone and the song got strings, horns and a choir with laughter and noises. George Harrison's Blue Jay Way uses reversed tape and a Leslie speaker. McCartney contributed The Fool on the Hill. The film received mixed reactions, but the music was a success: in America the album spent eight weeks at the top of the Billboard chart.
