Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Album
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band · At the end of August 1966 the Beatles stopped performing for good. During a flight to London in November Paul McCartney had the idea for a song about an Edwardian military band, and from that grew the idea for this album. The group continued the studio experiments of Revolver, now without a fixed deadline. Recording began on 24 November at EMI Studios and was finished on 21 April 1967. Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane were released separately as a single.
With producer George Martin and sound engineer Geoff Emerick, many songs received sound effects and treated tape, such as Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite! and A Day in the Life. The styles range from music hall and circus to avant-garde and Indian music. The album was released on 26 May 1967 and won four Grammys in 1968, including Album of the Year. The sleeve was designed by Peter Blake and Jann Haworth.
